The Conficker worm, sometimes called Downadup or Kido, has managed to infect a large number of computers. Specifics are hard to come by, but some researchers estimate that millions of computers have been infected with this threat since January.

Computers which remain infected with a previous variant of the W32.Downadup family will download a copy of W32.Downadup.C to enhance the capability of the existing threat.

The worm infects removable devices and network shares with an autorun file that executes as soon as a USB drive or other infected device is connected to a victim PC.

The new version is more resilient to disinfection. Once the system is compromised, the worm disables Windows Update and blocks access to most of the anti-virus websites in order to hinder the user to disinfect his machine.
